Shy Lights (2015)
Children’s Museum of Pittsburgh, Pittsburgh, PA
25’L x 5’Wx 12’H – pendulum mounted spotlights, electronics.
Circular spots of light projected on the floor move aside as people try to step into the light. When the person passes, the pendulum-mounted light swings back and forth to settle in its original position eventually. Because of each light’s avoiding behavior, the passage of a person through the space causes a ripple of movement that persists for some time after the person is gone.
The overall effect is a sense of life or personality. In biology, phototaxis or phototropism is a movement that occurs when a whole organism or a part of an organism moves towards or away from light. The ironic twist, in this case, is that the light avoids the organism.
