Plankton Projector (2011)
Exploratorium, San Francisco, CA
16"W x 16"L x 40"H
A laser is shone through a drop of seawater containing a concentration of plankton. The Water drop is both the medium for the tiny sea creatures and a lens that spreads the laser beam creating a magnified shadow projection of the plankton swimming around in the water. The water drop is formed at the tip of a seawater filled syringe. A micro controller and motor pressing on the syringe plunger automatically maintain the size of the drop despite the continual evaporation of the water.
